"My tutor, an academician of Chinese Academy for Sciences for 20 years, has made fruitful progress that triggers everybody's envy. His wife is so elegant and has a character so mild that her existence grants us a feeling of beauty."
Reads like a student's memoir? Well, believe it or not, the above sentences appeared in 2013 in the Journal of Glaciology and Geocryology, a top academic journal on the subject.
The report further reads: "This essay discusses the greatness of my teacher and the beauty of his wife, the basis for construction of a path of development that universally applies to everyone."
These lines were not in the credit section, but in the summary and the general text. The entire report was devoted on the subject. The issue became viral after snapshots of the report were posted on social networks on Jan 11.
One of the reasons the incident drew strong reactions was because the "tutor" in the above essay is Cheng Guodong, who is chief editor of the journal. Bad academic performance apart, the whole issue reeks of a possible relationship of interest, strong reasons for a probe.
Cheng, the mentioned tutor, applied for resignation from the journal.
On the same day, Xu Zhongmin, author of the essay, said that the essay has deeper meanings and is supported by his research. He also said it was unnecessary for him to flatter anybody because he had already been a tutor himself at the age of 30.
